Daylight come and the seedlings are still there
It’s actually been a couple of days since I planted the carrot seedlings and I’m happy to report that they have not been damaged or eaten or stolen. Even the seedling that was damaged when transplanting doesn’t appear to have been mortally wounded. They are all standing upright with no wilting and finally got a bit of sun today. I gave them a little drink yesterday and I’m going to hold off watering them today because they don’t like too much water and I don’t want them to rot.
The idea too is that if you are serious about having a particular home grown vegetable on hand you really should start planning for the next round! That means planting some seeds to take over from this batch. Once you pick a carrot that’s the end of it’s life unlike herbs and lettuces that you can prune.
If you have the space then a second pot would be ideal because you can start them off straight away in their soil but I plan on doing a number of pots with different crops so I can’t afford the space. I’ll plant them in seedling pots and just transplant them when they’re big enough.
The other thing to remember if using the same pot is that carrots are nutrient hungry and will drain the soil so before planting your next batch you may want to give the pot a little bit of a touch up with a natural fertiliser and some mulch or compost.
And so you know that I didn’t sit up all night guarding them here is a quick shot of my dog Memphis doing some guard duty. It’s a hard life.

I don’t know if you’ve seen my recycled potato planter: http://allthatcomeswithit.com/?p=360 but Im sure the principle could be extended to carrots. Apparently harvesting is meant to be easy as you just remove the tires and all the earth falls o the floor.

I’m going to have to some reading about that type of potato planter. I have to admit I know very little about potato growing but that seems like a very logical way of doing it!
Of course I’d have to break out my ninja gear to go get the tires! (read Dan’s post to see what I mean)

I read somewhere that of all the vegetables you are probably best off buying your potatoes from a shop. Not because they are hard to grow, but because they don’t taste all that different when fresh than when from the supermarket.
Still, i wanted to have a go.
We’re also growing frnch beans in pots. I do have a vegetable patch but I am still in the process of making the raised beds so we’re going patio pot planting this year.
