Growing a Pineapple Part Two

Check out the growth on thatSomething I’ve been putting off over the last couple of weeks (apart from updating this site!) was attending to the pineapple that I’ve been sprouting. I just haven’t had a chance to do real much in the ‘garden’ so last weekend I played catch up and the first cab off the rank was the pineapple sprout.

As you can see from the photo the pineapple has produced some nice strong roots. Usually you would probably pop him into a smaller pot to get the roots used to being in soil rather than just water and then transplant it over into a larger pot.

Judging by the current sorry state of affairs that is my time management it was for the best when I bypassed the intermediate step and gone straight to the large pot which will be the final home. Keeping the roots moist to minimize the trauma to the plant is important, I just took the glass of water it was in downstairs with me and it went straight from the glass to the hole. When moving it I brushed the roots by accident (I was trying not to touch them for risk of damaging them) and was really surprised how sturdy they were.

I made sure the soil was quite soaked as I imagine the plant will appreciate the extra water considering where it’s been sitting for the past several weeks.

Threw in some liquid fertilizer and made sure it was out of the way whilst it takes proper root in the soil. If you are going to put it in a smaller pot first that’s how you tell it’s ready to be moved, by checking if the roots have taken hold in the soil, once they have it’s time.

I hope that once the plant has taken root it should be quite sturdy and withstand any doggie high-jinks.

All settled in.

We have a pineapple growing in our office, started off by the same method you have outlined.

It wasn’t a planned thing, someone just did it on impulse when somebody brought in a pineapple for lunch. It’s become a sort of office pet though.

Hey Dan that’s a great idea - adopt a pineapple in your office. They are surprisingly robust.
