Growing a Pineapple Part One
OK so I live in Queensland so I should really give one of the states true iconic fruits to the test.
Well that’s ok for you, you’ll probably just plant it outside in your wonderful tropical paradise of a front yard and of course you’ll be able to grow one! But what about me with nothing but a small balcony and nothing but a pot of dirt?Â
Ah ye of little faith! That’s what this site is all about. First off you’re going to need to get yourself a full grown pineapple from the fruit shop. Try and pick one that is a nice mature one with healthy looking leaves.
I really love this because there is no waste when you prepare to grow new pineapples. Carefully take a hold of the leaves (they are a little spiky so you might want to wear gloves) and firmly twist the crown of leaves off of the pineapple. I don’t have any photos because they are stuck in the new digital camera and I’ll post them as soon as we get them.
Cut away any excess flesh that may have come off with the crown and then peel away the lowest leaves. This will expose some of the beginnings of the roots that will form over the coming days.
Once you’ve done this you put the crown aside to dry and repair itself. We’ll be popping them in water in the next couple of days, if we were to do so straight away the roots would possibly rot.
I’ll post the next step after I come to it as well as the photos.
