OK I don’t JUST write about lettuce!
But this post is a lettuce update (hangs head in embarrassment). Oh come on! You know you all love it!Â
The Downstairs Team
So with all the disasters that have befallen the downstairs team you’d think that all I’d have is a couple of sickly little plants struggling to survive against the odds. Not so, in fact one of the downstairs seedlings is very close to becoming a fully mature plant and I’m going to have to trim its leaves because it will eventually take over the entire pot. The other three survivors are all doing quite well even the one that was buried for half a week.
The Upstairs Team
Are all doing so well even after being harvested the other week. They are all back and bigger than they were so I think we’re going to have to have a salad on the weekend just to trim them back. They are a raging success and I would suggest them to anyone who has just the one window to use for a plant and want something they can eat!
The Upstairs Varient Plant
Well this is not a happy story. Not a happy story at all. It appears we have a rat lurking around. Yup a real rat… well not anymore as he took the bait last night. But before he did so he kicked me one last time and bit this lettuce right off at the base. You see there wouldn’t be so much hatred for this rodent if it actually ate the stuff that it killed but all it does is bite the plants off at the base and then leaves them. I’ve lost one carrot, snow pea and now the lettuce. It may still grow new leaves but I’m not hopeful.
Mizuna
Managed to only save one plant definitely and another one maybe, it’ll be touch and go with the second one and once again I’m not really hopeful. If I can manage to get the healthy one to grow to full maturity I may try and harvest some seeds from it (I’ve never done this before) because I can’t find any Mizuna seeds anywhere in the stores, I’m sure I can order some online but it seems like a lot of bother for the one varient when if I play my cards right I should be able to get seeds off anyway.Â
