More about Capsicums

Well thanks to Dan’s comment about the different colours of the capsicum I thought I’d research a little more on them. Like Dan I was under the impression that capsicum colours were primarily due to the ripening. Then I was reading about different types of capsicum which spoke of the different colours like they were different plants which led me to believe that there are indeed different types to bring out the different colours.

Well I’m happy to report that colour is indeed dictated by how ripe the capsicum is, however there are a number of different types of capsicum that produce the different colours.

Then I read a couple of places that spoke of some versions that mature to green and don’t change. So now I wonder what variety I have at my supermarket? Is it the one type of capsicum or is the different purpose bred for colour ones?

At any rate the idea of diversity is still a valid one and there are a huge range of different capsicums and we certainly don’t get exposed to them via our supermarket!
