Oregano - just try killing it!
It was with some surprise and delight that I discovered that the oregano plant that I had given up more than a year ago has come back with vengeance. You see I had some oregano planted and it didn’t produce very much and to be honest I never put much effort into the poor thing at the same time. Well we left it at my in-laws and never gave it a second thought.
It was in a position to get lots of sun and a little water when it rained and occasionally I’d have a look at it when we were over visiting and I was pretty sure it was dead.
Then the other day when I started this blog I thought ‘I wonder if’ and gave the oregano pot some fertiliser and a nice soaking. Well as I said surprised and delighted. The oregano is sprouting all through the pot - something I couldn’t get it to do before.
If you’re looking for a plant to grow with the kids that is hard to really kill then try oregano. Great on pizza and in pasta sauce and easy as to grow!
Apparently according to wikipedia oregano is high in antioxidant activity, particularly due to a high content of phenolic acids and flavonoids. Additionally, oregano has demonstrated antimicrobial activity against food-borne pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes. Both of these characteristics may be useful in both health and food preservation. In the Philippines, oregano is not commonly used for cooking but is rather considered as a primarily medicinal plant, useful for relieving children’s coughs. source
