About
I grew up in a number of small rural towns in New South Wales Australia before finally settling in Queensland. Throughout those years my family would often grow a small patch of veggies and at one house we even had chickens.
As a child nothing bored me more.
I think it was that I wasn’t actively involved in the growing and management of the gardens. Helping back then meant holding something in place or weighing a piece of timber down so it wouldn’t move whilst being cut. Occasionally being told to water the garden, there is nothing more mind numbing to a child than being told to stand in one spot watching water soak into the ground. Of course being told that I was doing it all wrong probably didn’t help. It’s no wonder I hated the country and couldn’t wait to move to the city!
Irony is a cruel mistress. Here I am in the city (well Brisbane), working with computers and about as out of touch with nature as you can get. And I really dislike it. Not the living in the city so much as not having any connection to the natural world. Even my ‘fresh’ food is from the supermarket where it’s been handled by who knows how many people and sprayed with a number of chemicals.
This was something that has been, and excuse the pun, growing on me over the past couple of months. After reading a bit about local growing versus organic I’ve really noticed that I have no idea where my fruit and vegetables come from. Often they will have product of Australia signed, but where in Australia? How far has my food had to come?
So my response to this longing to grow something is doing exactly that. Using my limited funds and space I will be getting some soil between my fingers and hopefully you’ll be interested enough to follow my modest green adventures in city growing!

I know that at this stage there is no way I could sustain myself with my own produce however I really want to infuse a little natural growing into my life. It isn’t perfect but who’s life is?
Now I’m no expert in this. I fully expect to stumble along the way and I’ll share my failures as much as my success. I don’t want anyone coming in and telling what to do and how to do things. I’m happy to ask questions but I really want to experiment and find my own way.
I most definitely will be really excited if anyone wants to follow my lead and try some inner city (or country) growing. I’d love it if you share your stories especially if you follow what I’m doing and have some success or positive stories to tell!
The other thing is if you want to get your kids to eat a wider variety of vegetables and get some fresh air and dirt under their fingernails there is no better way than growing vegetables or herbs in pots together. I mean really together get them to do the work not just hold the potting mix! Just remember store bought potting mix can cause respiratory problems and you should always read the labels!
The only other thing I’ll mention is I can’t guarantee regular posts all the time so I suggest you use my RSS feed or sign up for the email notices so you’ll know when the site updates!
So if you made it this far down the page I can only reward you with a link to the first post then you can work your way back to the latest post.
I hope you’ll be back soon to see how I’m going and drop us a line!
Cheers
